Depths of Darkness
In the deepest depths of darkness, even the strongest forms of light struggles to exist.
"Come on, we have to get out of here." Jayson said moving towards the door. Charles followed after as Flora stood there looking at the dead officer laying on the floor, his eyes still wide open. Toyin held her hands, "Hey, it's OK, let's go." Toyin said. Flora felt herself loosing all sanity, the dream, the deaths, they were overwhelming her. She followed the group non the less. Screams and gun shots filled the air and as they made their way through the hall way, all they saw were bodies upon bodies in pools of blood.
"Do you think it's following us?" Charles asked Jayson pausing his steps.
"Why else would it be here?" Jayson answered, sweat rolling down his face. Charles didn't reply,he just nodded and kept walking.
The lights began to flicker and the multicoloured walls of blue, yellow, red and green started to look like things which weren't there in Floras eyes. She held tight to Toyin's hand as they made their way through. Kunle and two officers in their uniforms ran in from the corner, they startled each other as they all tried to run but soon they realized it wasn't what they were all scared of.
Charles sighed loudly and Kunle lowered his pistol, Toyin and Flora sat on the floor.
"I'm really a dangerous killer, don't you agree Detective Kunle." Charles said sarcastically with a little smile crossing his face.
"What the hell are those things?" Kunle asked trying to catch his breath.
"That's the answer you were looking for." Jayson answered.
"You said 'those things' what did you mean by that?" Toyin asked looking at Kunle.
"They were about three of them, tall creatures with green eyes that glowed in the dark, they came in as the lights went out, they took out two squads in seconds." Kunle answered with fear grinding his soul.
"There's more than one of them?" Flora asked with a shaky voice.
"Yes three." One of the officers answered.
"What the hell is going on?!" Charles exclaimed.
"We have to get out of here." Jayson said his voice shacking under his breath. Another scream came from another man as they heard not to far away, "please! Please!" Another man begged but the scream after suggested he was being torn apart.
"They're two exits and we've tried both of them, those creatures are on the both of them, we lost a lot of men trying to get out, the window on the ground floor without a burglary is the detention room and that's where we're headed." Kunle said moving towards the room.
"Well, I guess we are going back then." Charles said
"What about the other floors?" Jayson asked
"No exits." Another officer answered.
They all started to move back to the detention room as quickly as they could, they wanted to leave that room for so long and now it was the only hope they had. They made the first turn when they saw it in front of them, its green eyes glowing as the flashes of darkness came on and off. Kunle stepped in front and fired as many shots as he could. The rest of them all ran in the opposite direction. Kunle ran after them when he emptied his gun. One of the officers lead in the race away from the creature but as they were almost at the end of the hall it appeared again grabbing him, driving its claws deep into his chest, his cry of pain faded like the setting sun. They all ran back from where they came as the officers lifeless body was flung towards them.
They all managed to get into the detention room an bolted the door behind them.Charles and Jayson tried to get the windows open as the others waited in horror.
"Oga, we have to call reinforcement, these things have killed all our friends." The officer said to the Detective .
"All our coms are down, even our phone networks are down, I don't understand any of this, let's just get out of this first before we think of revenge." Kunle replied.
Charles and Jayson finally got the windows open, "Alright, ladies first." Charles said.
They already helped Toyin and Flora out the window as a hard bang hit the door, it seemed like the door was going to come down. Charles and Jayson gave themselves a quick stare and both jumped out the window unto the roughly Interlocked ground. Kunle and the officer scrambled out the window as quickly a they could.
"Go left! My car is on the left!" Kunle shouted as they all ran. They all managed to get to the car, Kunle dipped his hands in his pockets hurriedly to bring out his keys. As he pulled them out his pocket they fell to the ground. They heard another scream from inside, that was probably another victim. Then they saw it as clear as day, it stood by the window watching them.
"Hurry !" Flora shouted as Kunle finally managed to open the car. It was a Honda Jeep, a pilot to be precise. They all rushed in, as Flora looked again and saw the creature standing few feet from the car, they all screamed as they all saw it to, Kunle stepped on the accelerate and the car speedily moved forward. They were almost at the gate when they saw it standing directly in front of them, Kunle hit the breaks as the car came to a stop, it was a chilly evening and the silence was uncomfortable, it stood there just staring at them. Toyin who sat embarrassingly on Charles legs looked behind them and saw another one just few steps from the car. She couldn't shout or utter a word, she just pointed as they all screamed In Fear and shock. The car lights began to shack and finally went off, even the lights of the building went off. They were now in the depths of darkness, Kunle tried restarting the car but it wouldn't start. He looked up and found nothing in front of them.
"Where did they go?" Flora asked on fear.
All they could hear were sounds, like heavy metals hitting the ground, which they were uncertain of where they came from. They sat there helplessly hoping for some kind of miracle, but even light finds it difficult to reach the deepest depths of darkness. A hand stretched into the car and pulled the officer on uniform out through the car window. They all screamed, another one came in through the back window and grabbed Jayson's arm but Jayson pulled as hard as he could. Kunle finally managed to restart the car, the tyres screeched and the car moved forward once more. The creature left Jayson's arm leaving a claw mark. They made it to the gate and drove through it. As Flora looked back at the station she saw Victoria standing at the gate looking at them standing in the centre of two other people she couldn't identify. Charles looked back and saw his neighbour standing on the right of a young girl and a tall dark man.
The streets outside the station had been deserted, the people around must have heard the screams and shots fired and ran for safety.
IKEJA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA
9:00PM
They had managed to go a safe distance from the station, they parked at a Filling station, people had gathered around them, wondering what had happened. Toyin was helping Jayson treat his wound while Charles and Flora sat in the car, they were eating few snacks Charles had gotten for every one with his ATM card, it had actually been a while since they ate. Kunle stood few feet from the Car, he was making a phone call. After a few minutes he came close to the car.
"An ambulance and police escort is on their way here, reinforcements are already on the station, found nothing but dead bodies." Kunle said angrily staring at his phone.
"What now?" Toyin asked still focusing on Jayson's wounds.
"Other agencies and armed forces are already in this, I'm not sure, we just wait for the escort and follow any process we need to." Kunle answered his hands still shacking.
"Or we can find answers." Flora said looking at the floor.
"What do you mean?" Charles asked.
"My friend Victoria, I know where she went before she came home yesterday, she started acting weird after she came back, we should go there." Flora answered.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Jayson asked in surprise.
"It thought it was just one of her mood swings."
"This is helpful, we should wait for the escort though." Kunle said dialing his phone again.
"You know, they wont give us the chance to go and find out ourselves." Charles said
"They'll lock us up, including you Kunle, we're suspects now." Toyin added.
"Too many people died, and we survived, they won't believe what we have to say either." Jayson said.
"We can go now and find out what all this is about." Flora added still looking at the floor.
"Are you all crazy, the police will think we're running because we're guilty. You also want us to go where these things most likely came from. In case you don't know it's few minutes after nine, and we might see these things again and you also know we can't defend ourselves against them. So no, we are waiting for the police." Kunle said to them.
"We might find evidence there, something we could use to make them believe us." Jayson said looking at Charles and then Kunle.
"It's our best option to get answers." Toyin said
"Are answers worth risking everything for?" Kunle asked
"We have nothing left Detective Kunle." Flora answered.
Kunle held his phone to his ear, "This is Detective Kunle, we are changing location, lock on to the signal of my phone and follow, approach with caution and heavy fire arms." He said. He ended the call and took a deep breath.
"If we die, it's all on you guys. Let's do this." He continued.
They all got in the car and drove off.
Dying light.
We see the death of light as darkness, we see it as a vast expanse on nothingness stretching ever deeper into the ends of oblivion, but no, darkness is a presence, an entity, its alive and it feeds off our fear, our pain, our anger and through this it grows.
LAGOS STATE POLICE COMMAND, IKEJA.
5:00 PM.
The walls were cements with paint hurriedly spilled upon them, the marks and drawings of those who had formerly occupied the cell ran across the room like a man covered in tattoos, the small window that existed on the wall right above their heads ushered in the only ray of light from the setting sun of the evening.
Charles was standing right by the iron barred gate while Jayson paced back and forth across the cell. Flora had fallen asleep on the long wooden bench and Dr Toyin sat on the other side looking at the only window in the cell. They had not said anything to each other since they got there, asides the question Charles asked Jayson to which he gave an answer. They all were just to shook up by the turn of events. Charles kept trying to understand how his life had turned into a blood bath so fast as his mind kept on pushing forward images of the monster. He didn't feel safe anymore and his mind began to play tricks on him, and why wouldn't that happen, he had barely slept.
Toyin still maintained her unwavering gaze upon the window, she saw as the light began to fade away and her heart began to sing its song of fear. She knew now the the evils that darkness brought and the cold dangers of death that lingered with it. She looked at Jayson and saw a scared young man, she assumed he wasn't above eighteen years. He hadn't stopped pacing for a while now and it wasn't helping Toyins heart. Jayson continued to think about Tom, how he would have to explain to his parents what happened, how their only son had died at the hands of something he could not understand, he wondered if Toms parents already knew he was gone, he wondered what his mother would say to him after all this, most importantly he wondered if he would survive the night.
Flora had gone deeply into the tempting hands of sleep, she now found herself standing alone in a long dinning hall. The chairs had been covered with white sheets and dust settled upon everything, even the ground on which she walked. She stood and looked around her, what was she doing here?
she thought to herself. She Turned back and saw the monster across the hall starring at her, her heart froze in her chest, she turned away and began to run but it followed her quickly. She got to a door and held down on its handle, it opened slightly but she turned back to see her chaser but there was nothing there. She cold not understand anymore, she just stood there gasping for air as her heart pounded away. She turned back to close the door when a hand crabbed hers and pulled her into a dark room. She screamed and clawed on the walls but she couldn't see anything, then like the faint sound of air a voice came from the darkness.
"Don't let it take you."
Flora screamed again, even louder than before as the light came on. She found herself standing in some kind of forest, she tried to walk but she couldn't, she saw a woman standing against her and the monster. This woman looked so much like her mother, the resemblance was uncanny.
"Don't worry, it won't take you." The old woman said with a smile across her face.
The trees began to bend and the leaves gave a loud rustling sound. The Monster ran towards her with everything it had but the old woman moved a hand and a branch held down the monster. As she raised and moved her hands in many aberrant gestures the tree grabbed the monster and held it against itself. She walked towards it and said,
"Go back to where you came from demon." The old woman said as the monster gave a loud cry and vanished into thin air.
Flora smiled, she felt safe, her heart began to relax and she tried to gain control of her breath. She could walk now, so she took a step but found her self back in the long dinning hall. She looked over her shoulder and saw the monster again walking towards her, its green eyes starring its cold gaze on her, its melted skin glistering in the dark, its long fangs and claws that seemed like an animals. She started running again towards the other end and saw Tom and Grace with blood covering their cloths shouting,
"Don't let it have you!!" Repeatedly. She stopped and looked back and once again it was gone. She decided to turn back to Tom and Grace and there it was again, it grabbed her and sank its teeth deep into her neck as she screamed.
Flora stood up screaming, panic in her eyes and sweat dripping down her face. Charles held tight to the bars as the shock startled him, Dr Toyin hurriedly moved her line of site towards her and Jayson ran to her hugging her tightly. Her eyes were still closed, she held Jayson like he was her saviour.
"Don't let it have me." She said looking at Jayson.
" I wont. " Jayson replied looking deep into her eyes.
"What was that about?!" Officer kelvin asked as he opened the cell for a man to walk in.
"My name is Kunle and I'm the one you're gonna be talking to, I want the truth and nothing more, then maybe we can help you." He said as four other officers came into the cell with hand cuffs.
"Just follow these man, we just want you to answer a few questions." He said pointing at them. Soon they were all hand cuffed and moved one by one out of the cell. As Charles who was the last to leave the cell looked back at the cell, he saw his neighbour again standing in the cell with the tall green eyed monster standing behind her.
"If you've been paying attention, this isn't the way we treat such cases but yours is.... Let me say Peculiar." Kunle said looking at all four of his suspects in the detention room. The walls were old and tacky with its colours ranging from yellow to red all scattered across the room.
"We already told you what happened." Charles said loudly with a hint of anger in his tone.
"You know I could have each of you in here one by one and ask question after question but I don't want to go through that long process. Whatever ever this is, we end it here." Kunle answered raising his voice even higher.
"There's something killing people in the state officer and you know it, you must have seen the marks and cuts on the victims, that's not ordinary." Toyin added with a subtle voice, she was tired, she just wanted it to end.
"Yeah, it's not ordinary, I also heard Mr Charles here was accused of doing the same kind of thing to himself." Kunle replied looking at Charles. Jayson and Flora look at Charles with shock over their faces.
"Are you saying I killed over two hundred people?" Charles asked
"I'm not saying that, I'm just saying if you could do it to your self what's stopping you from doing it to others?"
"It wasn't him, we thought it was but it wasn't him, it was that monster." Toyin said looking at Charles.
"Yes, the monster from hell on a killing rampage, thats what young Flora here said until Jayson decided to tell the truth. It was their friend Victoria who killed their friends." Kunle said looking at Jayson. Jayson put his eyes down, he couldn't face him.
"It wasn't here, its like is was using her but I know it wasn't her." Flora said with tears dripping from her eyes.
"People accuse many things of evil when they don't want to face the truth. I've seen human beings do things that would make your skin crawl, yet people say all sorts of things to avoid the truth. The four of you are the only witnesses we have to a multiple murder case and if you don't start thinking about the truth, you'll spend the rest of your lives wishing you did." Kunle said standing up.
"We already told you the truth." Charles said looking angrily at kunle. Kunle hit the table between him and his suspects and shouted at the top of his voice.
"In case you don't know, the government are keeping a close eye on this case, you're popular on the news and people want answers, the four of you are the only ones who can give us answers and we're gonna get it!" Kunle said with anger in his eyes.
"Its getting dark, we're not safe when its dark." Flora said in a gentle voice looking at Kunle.
"Well, you're not safe anyways in here." Kunle replied as he walked out of the room.
Darkness began so set upon their surroundings, only the electric bulbs kept them from complete darkness, the mosquitos began to prey on them as the cool evening breeze went by.
"Your injuries are they self inflicted?" Jayson asked looking at Charles.
"They're not but I guess you don't believe that." Charles answered looking back at him.
"I don't even know what I believe anymore."
"Well I guess we'll all find out in the end." Toyin said as the lights went off.
"Well, here we go again." Charles said sarcastically.
Flora screamed as loud as she could, she couldn't even bear the darkness anymore.
"Just stay calm its probably just an outage." Toyin said to Flora even if she couldn't see her.
From the depth of the darkness a man outside the room screamed and then there was silence. Then gun shots invaded the silence with multiple fires.
"Let's get the hell out of here, I'm not dying today." Jayson said standing up from his seat with his handcuffs still holding his hands together.
They all stood up after Jayson and tried to find the door when the lights came back up. The gun shots stopped and the deafening silence continued. The door swung open and officer kelvin rushed in with his hands over his neck, he was bleeding, something had cut through his neck, he fell to the ground helplessly as his blood began to pool the floor.
They all stepped back as Flora began to cry loudly.
LET EVERY EVIL THAT HAS SPILLED FROM THE HEART OF MAN BE A CONSTANT REMINDER OF THE DARKNESS THAT IS, AND ITS PRESENCE WITH THE LIGHT OF THE SOUL WHICH REVEALS THE GOOD AND EVIL PRESENT IN IS ALL.
Jayson and Flora were being questioned by the police, the clear light of day had spread across the land and a crowd gathered right outside the compound. Jayson was answering the inspector when Flora saw the paramedics taking out two bodies covered with a white stretch of nylon on a stretcher, she couldn't believe how she had lost two old friends in one night. She was confused, scared and angry.
"The two of you are the only survivors and the residence is no where to be found, this isn't good for you." Inspector Ben said looking at Flora and Jayson.
"I already told you what happened, there was..." Jayson tried to talk but was interrupted by the inspector.
"Yeah a green eyed monster came and started killing everyone, yeah sure , that makes sense." The inspector said anger beginning to grow on his face.
"I don't know who you're trying to protect but it's not going to work, the sooner you talk the better for you and everyone else." He continued with his voice rising in tone.
There was a long pause between them, Jayson couldn't say another word, he knew it was stupid to even try and convince the police.
"It was Victoria." Flora said still looking at her dead friends as they were being taken away by the ambulance.
"What!" Jayson exclaimed.
"Sorry? " the inspector asked looking at her for more information.
"Victoria killed Tom and Grace, she was going to kill us if we didn't get out on time and that's why she's not here , thats why she ran away." Flora continued now looking directly at the inspector with tears going down her cheeks.
"There's only one exit out of this compound and that gate is where you were until the locals could get to you and called the police. You both said she was in the house when you left and she never left but my people have searched that house completely , she isn't there, we didn't find her body , she isn't dead, then where is she ?" Inspector Ben asked with confusion all over his face.
"She dosen't know what she's talking about." Jayson said looking angrily but calmly at Flora.
"Apparently none of you do, we're taking you to the station at Ikeja for more questioning." Ben said waving his hands to two officers who quickly came and took them into the back seats of the police car. As they sat there handcuffed Jayson couldn't understand why Flora would sell out their friend like that.
" what the hell were you thinking, talking about Victoria like that." Jayson said with a hint of anger in his voice.
"Were you deaf or blind when she confessed ?" Flora said looking at the house.
"That wasn't our friend, that wasn't the person we've known for seven years now."
"Yeah it wasn't , she is someone else now."
"Dosen't mean she isn't in there, she's just under the control of that thing."
"Dosen't also mean she didn't kill our friends and flush the house keys down the Toilet."
"I can't believe you, so is this how you throw your friends out of the bus? Common we can still help her, all we have to do is find her."
"I don't think you felt what I felt today Jayson. I saw her eyes, she was in there but it wasn't her , she was terrified, something Evil had her under its control , her eyes were cold, it was like she wasn't alive anymore, it was like a part of her gave into the darkness. If we manage to get out of this with our freedom, staying far away from her would help you live longer. Flora said starring at Jayson, her eyes red as blood and tears dripping from them.
A black Jeep drove quickly into the compound, it was Victorian's Father, he ran towards the house but the police held him back. There was worry written all over his face. Inspector Ben walked to him and muttered a few words, he was filled with shock, he sat down on the floor with his suit and tie and put his hands on his head. Jayson and Flora watched in heart ache as they watched Victorian's Dad cry out. Inspector Ben pointed towards them at the car and he quickly ran over. They both greeted him but he ignored their greetings.
" where is my daughter !" He asked shouting at the top of his voice.
Inspector Ben quickly pulled him back, "sir we are taking them to Ikeja for more questioning , you can meet us there." He said trying to calm him down.
Victorian's Dad stood there looking at the house as the car drove out of the compound.
Another police man came to meet the inspector after receiving a phone call.
"There's another situation at Yaba, over two hundred people dead, just two injured survivors. They claim it was a green eyed monster did it."
"Lagos is becoming an interesting place Juwon." Inspector Ben said as they entered a black Camry and drove out the compound.
YABA, LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA.
Charles and Toyin sat at the back of an Ambulance answering some questions from the police.
" I'm Detective Moyo, I just spoke to the sergeant who questioned you initially. You claim to be attacked by a green eyed monster who also killed over two hundred people." She said taking notes as she talked.
"Yes, we don't know what it is but it was very quick and dangerous." Charles said looking at her.
Toyin sat there silent , looking as bodies upon bodies were taken out of the hospital. Flash backs of how her friends died keep going on in her head , she wanted to know what was going on , she knew she needed answers and if she didn't get it any time soon, she would go crazy.
"Doctor Toyin, do you understand the implications of his statements?" Detective Moyo asked.
"Yes Detective." Toyin answered still looking at the hospital.
A call rang across the silence from Detective Moyo's phone. She turned around and made a few steps away before picking the call.
"So what now ?" Charles asked looking at Toyin with fear in his eyes.
" we find out what the hell is going on." she replied smiling at him. It gave him comfort, for some reason he began to be comfortable around her. He knew now that she understood.
The Detective walked back after her call, "we'll be taking you to Ikeja for further questioning, this incident and a few others have caught the attention of the government."
"I guess we're famous now." Charles said sarcastically.
LAGOS STATE POLICE COMMAND, IKEJA.
"Doctor Toyin we're handing you over to the higher authority." Detective Moyo said as they parked at the station after a long drive. Two officers took them from the car and led them into the station. They walked right past the reception through a long hall way of cells until they finally got to the last one on the left. The cell was already occupied by a young Man and a lady, they couldn't be up to twenty five yet. Charles and Toyin stepped in and the cell gate was closed behind them. They both sat opposite their initial cell mates and for a little while they starred at each other.
"So are you kids scared of the dark?" Charles asked looking up to the little patch of a window above.
"You have no idea." Jayson replied looking at Flora who was sitting beside him.
LOCKED IN.
Darkness, how trapped we feel when it swallows us, how it brews fear in our hearts. We fail to understand the power of light within us.
Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital,Yaba, Lagos State, Nigeria.
Charles and Toyin went down every floor step by step as carefully as they could, they could find bodies on every floor and blood trails scattered all over the place.
"Doctor Dave! " Toyin shouted as she ran towards the man laying helplessly on the floor.
"you know him? " Charles asked kneeling besides her. A cough came from the man, apparently he was still alive.
" Of course I know him. " Toyin replied looking angrily at Charles.
"Toyin what is that thing? " Doctor Dave asked blood gushing uncontrollably from his chest.
" we don't know, but we are going to get out of here sir just hold on. " She replied, she turned to Charles.
" His lungs are punctured, he's drowning in his own blood."
" what are we going to do? " Charles asked looking troubled.
Toyin quickly pulled off her lab coat and placed them against Doctor Dave's chest.
" I can't stop the bleeding. " she said with a little sobbing in her voice.
" Toyin, he's dead." Charles said holding her hands, the poor guy passed away moments ago. Tears fell quickly down her cheeks as she placed her hands over his eyes closing them. She laid her head over his belly and cried. Charles moved closer to her and raised her up, he looked deep into her eyes and told her,
" I know he probably meant Alot to you but the only way to make his death count for anything is making it out of here and getting the thing that's doing this."
" I'm really sorry I didn't believe you Charles. "
" It's alright, I probably won't have believed me." Charles replied, Toyin crossed her hands over her eyes and cheeks cleaning the tears that came down.
"why haven't the police gotten here yet or something. " Charles asked.
" Network is really bad for some weird reason and this whole lock down technology dosen't come with police distress calls."
" Typical, I actually thought for once we built something good in this country. " Charles replied as he helped Toyin to her feet.
They finally got to the last floor,
"The next floor from here is the basement, if we can manage to get the power back up we should be able to go through the main entrance and out of here." Toyin said as they both descended gently. Charles reached to the floor and picked up a torch,
"Guess it's my lucky day. " he said sarcastically shaking his head. He switched it on and they moved into the darkness of the basement.
They held each others hands and moved as carefully as they could,
"OK take the turn to your left. " Toyin said pointing to there left. As they made the turn a man and a woman popped out of the corner, their faces filled with sweat, they had been running and probably decided to hide.
"Jake, Odion, God, you people are alive! " Toyin said loudly as she spoke, a glimmer of a smile grew from the sides of her lips.
"we managed to escape it a few times, we were six at first. we're the only ones left now." Odion said panting.
"I'm really sorry, we managed to escape to but we are heading to the security control center and put on the emergency power so we can leave the hospital. " Toyin said calming her voice now.
" we already tried Toyin, that's how the other people died, what ever that thing is, it's not letting anyone near that emergency power, we have to get to the upper level and wait at least till morning. " Jake said already walking towards the stairs.
"we won't make it till morning, it's either this or we die. " Charles said flashing his torch down the hall.
"what is that thing? Did you guys get a good look? " Odion asked fear screaming through her eyes.
" it's probably one of the patients." Jake answered putting his hands over his face cleaning the sweat running down.
"yeah a patient that can kill people in seconds, a patient as huge as that, a patient that can do this! " charles said pointing to Toyins stomach.
"look what ever it is, we gotta get out of here, we all go together to that control room and fight our way through it together or we dying. " Toyin said looking at every one of them.
"I know we scared but it's our best option. " Charles added.
"Alright, I'm in, better I die fighting than running. " Jake said as he picked a large piece of wood on the floor.
"I don't know if I can do this. " Odion said her voice shaking.
" it's our only chance, common Odion. " Toyin said as they all fell behind Charles as he pointed the torch down the hall to the control room. They all began to walk when they heard the sound behind them, like a wild beast, snarling desperately in need for prey to feed on. Charles turned back and flashed the torch behind them, there was nothing there as he turned back to face his former direction, there it was directly in front of him. A loud scream came from Toyin and Odion as it hit Charles against the wall, Jake hit the long piece of wood right on the head of the green eyed monster but it seemed not to have effect and even seemed to anger it the more. It came over him and sank it's teeth deep into his neck, he screamed but soon his shout turned into a gasp for air as he dropped to the ground. Charles quickly got up and flashed the torch upwards but nothing was there, it was already gone, Toyin and Odion quickly got to Jake, he laid lifeless on the cold hard ground.
" oh no Jake! " Odion cried out loudly, Toyin held her and hugged her tightly.
" common let's get to that control room. " Toyin said as she grabbed Odion and took her to her feet and they walked right past Jakes dead body. They quickly got the control room and as soon as Charles went in first, the doors closed behind him. He ran back to the door and hit it as hard as he could.
"Toyin , what's going on?! " he asked in a loud voice.
" I don't know, look get to the other end of the room at the corner right you'll find a red button covered with a glass, the glass is bulletproof to, there should be a key on the control panel, it's bunch, one of the keys should open the glass cover, you push the red button and the emergency power should come on. " Toyin said as fast as she could. Her and Odion were in complete darkness, they could see a thing.
"Hurry Charles! " Odion shouted.
Charles hurriedly to the other end of the room and found the glass covers red button and bunch of keys on the control panel. There were alot of keys, he quickly started trying ever one, his hands shaking uncontrollably.
Toyin and Odion held each other in the darkness covered with fear, Odion began to cry, she couldn't help it, she couldn't understand why all these were happening. Suddenly the green eyes appeared in front of them, it grabbed Odion by the leg and began to drag her into the void of darkness, Toyin held onto her as it dragged her along.
"Don't let it take me away Toyin! " she shouted with fear in her heart, she could feel the creatures cold hands tightly against her leg. Toyin screamed as she held on with all her might.
Charles heard the scream and took a quick pause, he tried again and the bunch of keys fell from his hands. He picked them up and continued to try. The creature clawed aggressively into Odion, she screamed and soon all Toyin could hear was Odion gulping and gasping for air, she could feel blood splashed all over her even if she couldn't see clearly. She let go of Odions already lifeless body and began to crawl back to the door as fast as she could, when she got to the door she put her back against it and cried, tears running down her face she screamed,
"Charles! "
The creature was now before her, it crabbed her by the neck and raised her off the ground and bit her on her shoulder, sinking it's long teeth into her trapezius muscle, her scream for pain was mild, she could barely breathe for it tightened it's grip around her neck.
Charles could hear her struggle, he took a deep breath and tried another key, it worked, the glass flung open and with no hesitation, he pushed the button. Immediately the lights came on and the door came open. Toyin fell to the ground, it was gone, she put her hands on her bleeding shoulder as Charles rushed out to meet her.

FEAR IN THE DARK.
Fear creeps In the dark, fear grabs your soul in the dark, not because of what we think is there but our uncertainty of what is.

Jayson, Flora and Grace stood in shock and fear, Victoria stood opposite them, her eyes looking lost, in the dark they were and it was hard to see.
"Victoria, there's something in the house. " Jayson said, his voice shaking and his heart pounding out Of his chest.
"I know and I can't explain what it is, it's complicated." Victoria replied looking at them.
"where are the keys to the front door? " Flora asked her hands still clenched against Graces hands.
"I threw it in the toilet." Victoria said her eyes filing with tears.
"But why?" Grace asked as she cried.
Victoria burstedbusted into tears,
" I don't know, it's like I'm not in control of what I'm doing anymore. " Victoria said.
"How the hell are we gonna get out of here? " Flora asked looking at Jayson.
"Vicky, is there a spare key?" Jayson asked taking a few steps towards Victoria.
" Yeah it's in my Dads room, but it's locked and he took the key. " Victoria answered.
"That's not a problem, Jayson can break in down. " Flora replied.
"I'm really sorry guys. " Victoria said still in tears.
"Tell that to Tom, he's right there in the kitchen. " Flora said angrily pointing to the kitchen.
"it's not my-" Victoria was about to say something when her eyes turned green and there it was, the creature stood right behind her. Grace screamed loudly as Jayson hurriedly stepped back.
"Run, Run, upstairs!" Jayson shouted as three of them quickly moved towards the stairs.
"Run all you want little ones but you will never escape the darkness that befalls you! " Victoria shouted, her voice now sounding like an old woman, deeper and darker. Jayson, Flora and Grace got upstairs and ran through the hall and got to the master bed room. Jayson began to hit the door,
" she didn't even tell us where it was, how the hell are we gonna find it? " Flora asked shouting at the top of her voice.
" Just break the door first, we'll think about that later. " Grace said as she shook out of fear.
Jayson used his feet again and again against the door, Flora and Grace put there backs against him as they looked down the hall and saw the creatures green eyes move closer to them in the darkness. Their fear grew in the darkness around them, the creatures feet hitting the floor like metals hitting the ground and a wild groan like a wild beast left its mouth.
"hurry! " Flora and Grace yelled at Jayson, it was few feets from the them when Jaysons feet broke through the door locks.
"Hey, you guys hold that door down, while I search for the key. " Jayson said quickly.
"Have you seen that thing, it's huge, how are we suppose to hold it off. " Grace said in fear as her voice shook.
"Just for a little while OK." Jayson assured them.
"we find the key and then what? We're trapped in here. " Flora asked.
"one step at a time Flora." Jayson answered.
Jayson searched around and was about checking the wardrobe when the creature hit the door, Flora and Grace jerked back a few steps and quickly ran back to hold the door.
"Jayson please tell me you've found that key!" Flora shouted at the top of her voice. Grace stood beside her, holding the door with all her strength and crying helplessly.
" I got it!" Jayson shouted as he pulled it out of the wardrobe, he ran towards the door and held against it, when the next hit came, it pushed them back a bit but they still held on.
" what now Jayson? " Flora asked sweat running down her face and tears going down her eyes.
The next hit came harder than the last and it pushed them to the ground, Jayson quickly got up and held on the door, Flora and Grace quickly got up and joined him.
"leave the door, so when it hits it with all its got it'll fall in and we'll run out. " Jayson said gently to them.
They all quickly moved to the side of the door and waited for the next hit so they could run out. It all went silent, all that could be heard was their own panting. The door just gently moved wide open. They all moved away from the door and stairedstarred outside it, the darkness swallowing everything, they couldn't see a thing.
Jayson pulled out his phone and switched on the torch, the dark hall way became illuminated by light, there was nothing there only silence and the fear in their hearts of where it was, where that demon could be.
"Alright, let's run straight for the front door, open it and leave." Jayson said already preparing to move when Flora held him.
"what if it's a trap?" she asked.
" we can't just stay here Flora." Jayson answered.
" It's to risky, I mean it could just be at one corner waiting for us. " Flora replied.
" We're going to have to take the risk, we don't have a choice, if we stay here it'll kill us one by one. " Jayson said, he looked at Grace,
"Don't worry, we're going to be fine OK. " he continued holding her by the shoulder.
" I hope so. " Grace said.
They all started down the hall as quickly as they could, they got to the stairs and were on their way down when grace fell and hit her knees against the edge of the stairs, Jayson and Flora didn't notice. As they got to the door, the creatures green eyes became visible from the opened kitchen door as it moved towards them, Jaysons hand shook with fear, he just couldn't fit the key in the lock.
"Jayson hurry, it's coming! " she shouted in hurry.
"I'm trying, I'm trying." he replied.
"oh my God, where's Grace?" Flora asked, her voice filled with terror. Grace, crawled out the corner, she couldn't walk, she was opposite the kitchen and a little ahead of the creature.
The door opened and Jayson quickly pulled her out the house,
"where's Grace?" he asked her .
"she's right there! " Flora pointed to Grace, she was almost at the door as she crawled her way out of the house.
"common, Grace. "
"hurry! "
They both shouted but the creatures face became visible beside the door, it looked out, it's cold green eyes starring at Jayson and Flora as it closed the door gently. Jayson and Flora ran to the door and hit it with all they could but it wouldntwould'nt come open. They both screamed at the top of their voices but in the end, a loud scream came from Grace who was still inside the house.

A MARKED SOUL.
For when darkness hunts you and creatures of the dark seek your flesh, one will seek the light. But when ones soul is marked, the light becomes harder to reach and the claws of death drag you deeper into darkness.

Charles opened his eyes finding himself in a small room, the walls pilled and different finger marks on them. He sat up and found himself in an hospital gown, he's clothes had been taken and he felt sick, his wounds had been treated. He stood up and was about to walk to the door when a woman and two men walked into the room, he stepped back slowly and sat back down on the bed, the two men beside the woman were huge, there was no way he could fight his way out of there.
"who are you people and what do you want? " Charles said, his voice shaking as his eyes peered around the room.
"I am Doctor Toyin." she said stepping closer to Charles and pulling a chair by the side of the room and sitting on it.
"your name is Charles and you work in a bank, GT bank to be precise, am i correct? " she asked looking into a file in her hands.
"what am I doing here?" Charles asked starring at the Doctor.
"you were brought in here already sedated, that only happens when hostility comes up. Can you tell me why you were so agitated?" she asked again this time concentrating on him.
"first of all I'm not crazy and-"
" you know that's what crazy people say right? "
"yeah that's what they say." Charles answered putting his hands on his head.
"why did you hurt yourself like that? I mean your injuries. "
" I didn't, it was something else, it-"
" something, Mr Charles, you are referring to the creature you claimed to have attacked you."
" claimed, something really attacked me. "
"Mr Charles there was no evidence of anyone else In Your house."
" Exactly, it wasn't a person, it was something else."
"Mr Charles, people hurt themselves for various reasons and if you want me to believe you are sane, your going to have to accept what happened and try to get us to understand. This session is over, I'll see you tomorrow. " she said as she walked out with the two men, locking the door behind them.
Charles could not believe how much his life had changed in few hours, now darkness began to swallow the room and the light of day began to fade away. Charles laid on the bed, his mind searching for a possible solution to his problem, he sat up and just at the corner of the room he saw it again, it's green eyes glowing in the dark, and it's snarling sound like a hungry animal. His heart skipped a beat and his eyes widened in fear, it came closer and closer, it's feet sounding like hard metal hitting the ground. It stood few feet from him now, it's huge size covering the little shimmer of light that peered Into the room. Charles stared at it, expecting the worse, it probably had come to finish him off, finish what it started. It raised its hands and leaned forward, it's burnt like face becoming visible from the endless darkness when the lights came on. The creature disappearing as light illuminated the room. He stood up shouting at the top of his voice,
"get me out of here! "
He walked to the door and hit as hard as he could , "get me out out of here!" he cried, he couldn't take it any longer, the feeling of always being trapped and no where to go, always alone with that thing. The door opened and his heart gave a quick relieve but the two huge men came in and put him on his bed. They held him down and injected him with a sedative. As they left him, he began to fade out, loosing consciousness gradually, as his vision became blur he saw Miss Jane standing behind the men, his heart stopped, he tried to shout but no words will leave his mouth and eventually he passed out.

Charles woke up in total darkness, he heard a scream from a woman not to far from where he was, he found his room door opened and a trail of blood going right past his room. Just a torch light on the floor illuminating only blood in all the darkness. He walked towards the light and picked up the torch and searched his current environment, his fear became Intense and the sweat running down his face would show so. He followed the trail of blood slowly, scared for what he may find, another scream came from behind him, he quickly turned back but found nothing. He then continued on the trail, he found one of the guards, the man who sedated him. He laid on the floor, his eyes wide open and a lot of blood flowing from him. Charles knew he was dead but immediately he heard a cough from a room ahead. He walked quickly to it and walked in, Just on the floor with her back against the wall and blood staining her lab coat was Doctor Toyin. Charles ran to her, she had been injured, large claw marks going across her abdomen.
" Hey doc, why did you do this to yourself? " Charles asked with a little smile curving at the edge of his lips. Doctor Toyin held him by the hand,
" you were right, I saw it, it's huge, it's like an animal, its-"
" hey, I know, I'm not crazy, how do we get out of here. "
"what ever that thing is, it shot down the entire security system manually, we're trapped in here unless someone can down to the basement and turn it back on. It was a new system the Government got in case some crazy person managed to escape and tried to leave. "
"can't we just break a window or something? "
" Good luck with that, they're are bulletproof glasses."
" Alright then, I'll get to the basement and you-"
"I'm coming with you, there's no way I'm staying here alone besides you need directions. "
" but your wounds."
" I'll live, let's go. "

THE DARKNESS INSIDE.
For we all have darkness within us, it feeds on your fears and emotions and when it finally takes you, it reveals itself.

11pm, 30th November 2017.
Tom's eyes were widely opened, his mouth opened and shaking like a stroke had clenched around him. Drops of sweat fell from his head and lined down is dark skin. He was starring at something he could not explain, a creature hanging just at the top corner of the store, it's eyes glowing green, it's flesh roughened like burnt meat and it's claws sharp and long like an animal. It dropped down to the floor and Walked towards Tom, it's feet sounding like metals hitting the tiled floor. Tom finally managed a scream as he stepped back, the creature bounced on him like a lion bouncing on a deer, it sank it's sharp long teeth into Tom's neck and a scream suddenly dwindled into a struggle for air. He hit and struggled but soon the light disappeared from his eyes and he laid lifeless on the cold tiled floor.
Jayson and Flora heard the scream and quickly ran towards the kitchen, Grace got up immediately after, Jayson opened the door and his heart sank in his stomach, he saw the creature again, the one he had seen earlier on, tearing flesh out of his best friend, he screamed and immediately the the creature turned and disappeared into the darkness.
"Oh my God, what was that? " Flora asked looking at Tom's lifeless body on The floor. Jayson rushed to him and knelt beside him, putting his friend on his laps,
"Tom, common, wake up. " he said Tears falling from his eyes. Grace stood at the door, tears in her eyes and fear gripping her soul. Flora knelt beside Jayson.
"I can't stop the bleeding, what the hell was that thing?!" he asked tears falling down his cheeks.
"I don't know, we have to call an ambulance. " Flora said getting up and running to the living room, Grace ran after her. They both got to the living room and found Victoria missing.
"Hey, go find Victoria, I'll call the ambulance. " Flora said walking towards the land line as Grace quickly climbed the stairs to check Victoria's room. Flora tried calling but the lines were cut, she pulled out her phone and realized there was no service.
"what in God's name is going on? " she asked herself as she ran back to the kitchen.
Grace got to Victoria's room and walked in,
"Victoria, where are you? " she whispered through the dark room, she quickly got her phone out and switched on the torch. The dark room illuminated into a well designed room of a lady, the pink color filling the room and the fluffy bed before her. She stepped carefully and moved towards the bathroom
"Victoria, I know you're scared but we have to stay together." Grace said, her voice a little louder now. Just like a sobbing sound she heard something in the bathroom, it was definitely Victoria she thought to herself, she opened the bathroom door and looked in but there was no one there. Her hands shook uncontrollably. Immediately the room door slammed shot, her phone fell from her hands immediately as she ran towards the door. She hit it as hard as she could and screamed, her phone torch went off and all she could see Was a pair of green eyes coming closer to her. She turned her back against the door and watched the glowing terror come closer, the sound it made as it walked closer, she screamed helplessly hoping someone would hear her but all she could hear was this creature breath heavily like a wild beast. It grabbed her by the neck and pulled her to the ground, tears filled her eyes now, and no screams left her mouth. She had given up and prepared herself for the possible worse when she heard Jayson and Flora at the door.
"The door is locked grace, what's going on in there? " Jayson said as he hit the door.
" It's here with me, help! " Grace shouted, her voice shaken from fear. The creature stepped back until it disappeared into the darkness as Jayson hit the door down. Grace had never been so happy to see her friends, Flora hugged her as she cried. Jayson's torch peered through the room but there was nothing there.
" Tom's dead." Jayson said, tears falling from his eyes as she looked at them.
" We have to get out of here." Grace said her voice still shaking.
" what about Victoria? " Flora asked looking at Jayson.
" I don't know guys but I think it's her. " Jayson said bending down to their level.
"Earlier today when I screamed in the bathroom... " he continued.
"yeah I remember. " Flora interrupted.
"well I saw that creature as her reflection in the mirror, that's why I screamed. "
" And you didn't tell us anything, maybe if you did, Tom would still be alive!" Flora shouted looking angrily at Jayson.
"How was I suppose to know!"
"well she has been acting weird lately, I knew something was wrong but I just thought it was one of her mood swings." Grace said still crying.
" what the hell is that thing anyways, A demon?" Flora asked looking at Grace and Jayson.
" Don't care, all I know is that we need to get out of here now." Jayson replied lifting Grace to her feet and holding her by the hand. Flora followed beside them.
" stay, together." Flora said.
They all got to the front door and found it locked.
" who locked the door and where is the key? " Jayson asked trying to hit the door, it was a bulletproof door so it was of no point.
" I locked it and gave the key to Victoria. " Flora said putting her hands on her head.
"what about the back door?" Grace asked pointing to the other end of the house. They all quickly ran to the back door and also found it locked.
"we never lock the back door." Flora said her eyes filled with fear. Immediately the lights went off and darkness covered the house.
" PHCN just took it at the right time." Flora said angrily.
"Hey, guys what's going on?" Victoria said standing few feet away from them. Grace and Flora screamed while Jayson looked in terror.
"I saw Tom in the kitchen, I think he's dead and then I heard screams, what's going on guys? " she asked as she cried.
"where have you been Victoria? " Jayson asked looking at Victoria in fear as Grace and Flora held each other shaking in fear.

WHEN DARKNESS FINDS YOU.
For when Darkness finds you, you will face it alone.

They say darkness is illuminated by light but what happens when the light leaves? When the once free space inside you is taken by something evil, something dark, something that was lurking in the shadows waiting for the light to leave.
Victoria would spend her evenings in the library, reading, taking every bit of information in the world she could get. She was a lovely young woman, with love and compassion but that all changed when her mother died. Her love for the world grew into hate and her compassion turned into desperation. She would do something that would change her life forever. The love for her mother was undying, a fire which no amount of tears could quench. She wanted to communicate with her mother, to talk to her just one last time, to call her soul from the other side.
"Are you ready Victoria? " Miss Adunni asked, her hair curled like a snake with smooth skin over her head. A candle laid between her and Victoria in a dark room. Her hands clenched together with Victoria's. Victoria looked into the flames her eyes filled with both fear and excitement, she sucked on her lower lip and with a subtle voice "I am MA. "
"Alright dear, now close your eyes and think of your mother, remember whatever happens we do not break the bond, our hands must be together through out."
Victoria closed her eyes, "yes MA"
"Okay, keep your eyes closed." Miss Adunni said looking deeply into the flames.
"Now call her name, the gate is opened, call her name let her come to us. " she said quickly.
"Vivian Adeleke, It's me Victoria Adeleke, Mom it's me can you hear me?"
The light faded and dulled into a small blue flame as shadows filled the walls of the room. A sharp wind hurriedly went by and like a singing bird a voice came from the dark, as gentle and beautiful as her mothers.
"My Angel, how are you? , I miss you so much."
"I miss you to mom, I've been trying to reach you. " Victoria replied still holding tight to Miss Adunni's hand.
"This isn't safe My Angel, you have to go now?"
"Mom what's wrong? "
" I'm somewhere I can't explain, it's not heaven or hell but it's terrible here, there's something here with me, it wants to get out, you have to go now, it... "
"mom, mom where are you? Mom I love you so much." Victoria said as tears ran down her chick.
"Victoria, come back, there's something there with her!" Miss Adunni shouted as she shook Victoria.
Victoria screamed and as her eyes opened the flame on the candle brightened up. Miss Adunni quickly got up and switched on the electric bulb and a once dark room illuminated into a bright room with lots of ornamentals and furniture.
"Are you okay? " Miss Adunni asked her handing her a glass water.
"I'm fine now and I really have to leave, thank you for everything Ma. "Victoria answered as she stood up, picked up her bag and was about to leave when Miss Adunni stopped her.
"There was something with her, it was dark, I could feel it's presence are you sure you're okay? "
"I am MA." she answered as she left.

Victoria's Father had made a business trip to South Africa and she wasn't planning on spending the weekend alone at least not on a Friday night.
There were two of her friends at home already and it was just the two guys remaining to make the gang complete. Flora and Grace had been friends with Victoria since childhood and even now when they knew she was going through some hard times they were there for her.
2pm,30th November 2017.
Tom and Jayson walked in through the front door. They didn't knock, they had been friends with Victoria for so long they were practically family.
"I wonder what took you guys so long." Flora said raising her head to the guys.
"we got held up somewhere." Tom replied touching the back side of his hair.
"The truth is, one of his babes won't let him go." Jayson said laughing as he walked towards the girls. The whole group laughed loudly as the guys took their seats.
"I thought Tom stopped running different girls." Grace said still laughing and starring at Jayson.
"I guess old habits die hard. " Victoria replied, her voice gentle and low with no smile on her face
"I ain't got time for you guys. Please what did you guys cook? " Tom asked rubbing his stomach.
"your love for food scares me Tom. " Flora said looking at him.
"There's rice in the kitchen. " Grace said pointing to the kitchen. Tom stood up hurriedly and made his way to the kitchen.
"I'll like to use the bathroom, BRB guys." Jayson said as he walked out of the living and went into the bathroom.
Tom walked into the kitchen and took a plate from the rack, he picked up a spoon and got some rice from the pot. He was about walking out when he heard his name from the store, like a whisper.
"whose there? " he asked, his voice shaking behind his tongue.
"Tom"
He heard it again, this time a bit louder as he walked closer to the kitchen stores door to open. His hand was over the handle when Flora walked in the kitchen.
"I began to wonder what was keeping you, hope you didn't take the whole pot because I know your stomach is a void."
"very funny."he said as he walked out and made his way to the living room.
Jayson has just finished taking a piss and decided to wash his hands in the sink. A knock came from the door.
"Hey Jayson it's Victoria, are you done? I wanna get something in there."
"yeah sure come in I'm done."
Jayson bent to the sink level and put some water over his face. As he looked up to the mirror he saw something coming into the bathroom through the door. I had claws and a skin that looked burnt, a glow of green shinning from its eye. Jayson screamed and turned around quickly.
"you okay Jayson? " Victoria asked looking at him with no shock or surprise on her face.
Jayson looked back at the mirror and only saw a reflection of Victoria. The others rushed over to see what was going on.
"what wrong Jayson? " Grace asked looking confused.
"Nothing guys, I'm sorry was just me spooking myself out." Jayson answered walking out the bathroom.
11pm, 30th, November, 2017.
The whole gang had fallen asleep, they had talked and eat. They had all fallen asleep watching a movie. Tom slept at the edge of the living room on a long couch. His eyes opened immediately he heard his name. He looked around the living and saw everyone was fast asleep. The voice calling him came with a whisper and sounded like an old woman. It was coming from the kitchen. He stood up and walked slowly to the kitchen, when he got to the kitchen door he pressed his ear against the door and he heard it again, this time faster. He jerked and stepped back.
"what the hell is going on?" he asked himself, he had visited this house more times than he could count and he had never experienced this. He opened the door and walked in, he tried switching on the lights but they wouldn't come on. Then he heard it again, his name, something calling out to him. A cold chill ran down his spine as his heart raced. It was coming from the kitchen store. He walked to the door and opened it. It was to dark in there and he couldn't see anything inside. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and switch on his torch. What he saw made his heart stop and his mouth too mute to scream.

IN THE DARK.
Charles was never scared of the dark, not even a little frightened by it, he felt only kids should be afraid of the dark but he was wrong, as he soon found out the horrors in the dark only children were smart enough to remember.
18th November,Saturday, 4:00am.
Ikorodu, Lagos state, Nigeria.
Charles was the work all week and relax on a friday night kind of guy, he went to the club every Friday with his friends from work and they would hit the bottles till the early hours of the morning. Now Charles had enough and began to find his way home, he got in his car and struggled to drive home. He knew any cops now would mean he would spend the day in a cell. In a few minutes he got home. He lived alone in a small Town called Ikorodu. It was usual for him to come home meeting no light at home but today felt different. He looked at his apartment and through the window there stood a figure, a figure he couldn't make out, it was dark and what ever it was wore a long dark robe. He quickly got his phone out of the car and switched on the Tourch but to his surprise there was nothing there. He shook his head and exhaled loudly, it was probably the alcohol messing with him now, he thought to himself. "I have to stop drinking soon. " he said to himself as he walked to the front door. He had his key in his hands as he was about to unlock his door, his heart raced, he could feel something cold in him, something evil lurking around and as he unlocked the door fear began to creep in. The door swung right open and an endless void of darkness filled the house as he looked in from outside. He could feel a cold chill down his spine and his ears twitched.
"Hello"
Charles jumped and turned around in fear, his eyes as wide as a light bulb.
"sorry I startled you, I'm Jane your new neighbor, I just moved in a few days back, I haven't had the chance to see you since I got here. " she said as her fair skin gave a touch of light to the immediate darkness.
"yes, ah, uhm, I'm Charles, I'm not usually home cause of work. You're welcome to the neighborhood."
"oh thanks alot, Just saw you drive in so I decided to say Hello. "
"oh OKay then, it's quite early..."
"yh, yh it is, I'm an insomniac, I don't really sleep alot sorry I startled you."
"No it's all good, you should get some drugs so can at least get some sleep. "
"yeah, I'm working on it." Jane said as she crossed her hair behind her ears.
"so I'll see you around, try and get some sleep. "
"Mr Charles, are you afraid of the dark? "
"what?"
"Good night Mr Charles." she said as she walked away back to her apartment.
What was she talking about when she asked that question, he wondered to himself. He pushed away the thought and concluded he would switch on his generator immediately he got in.
He walked through the dark living room with his phones torch illuminating a small patch of darkness. He still had it in mind that he saw something in his house earlier on, so he left the door unlocked just in case. He went straight to the balcony behind his flat to switch on his Generator. When he got there the Generator was empty. He just bought some fuel yesterday, what could have happened to it? He felt anger rise in his heart. He looked through the window again into his house and saw something walk through the dinning into where the rooms were. His heart skipped a beat. He was already feeling to sober to have imagined that. He musterded up some courage and went into the house. He took his steps carefully with his phone torch in his hands. He got to the dinning and looked around, his hands were shaking now. He continued to the first bedroom which was his guest room and looked in. He walked in slowly and looked around as something walked passed behind him right outside the door. He turned back hurriedly as his heart raced faster and faster every second. He walked out the room and went to his room. The torch went round the room patch by patch as he walked in. He closed the door behind him sat on the bed. He tried to calm himself down.
"only children are afraid of the dark Charles." he said to himself as he closed his eyes with his hands.
He then heard a sound in the bathroom, it was like a hiss and a deep voice together. He stood up in shock and quickly got his torch facing the closed bathroom door. He had enough already and walked straight into the bathroom to see if anyone was there, but no one was. Surprised and confused he faced the mirror and put his face to the tap. He took his first wash and looked back at the mirror. Something was behind him. It's eyes glowed in the dark with a wicked green colour, it had long fangs and what looked like a burnt face, wearing a long dark hooded robe.
He screamed louder than he thought he could shout and turned to face The horror but to his surprise there was nothing there. He looked back at the mirror and nothing was there. He thought he was going crazy and any moment now he would snap. He picked up his phone and immediately he opened the bathroom door there it was.
It was huge, about six feet, it grabbed him by the neck and threw him to the other end of the room. By the time he stood up it was gone, his phone had broken during the fall and it's power went off. He was alone now with something he couldn't explain in the dark. He immediately ran towards the front door and found it locked. He had made sure he left it unlocked, who could have locked it? He looked around for the key and remember he kept them on the dining when he came in. He rushed there and shakingly searched the table but I wasn't there. He then ran to the back door leading to the balcony and to his most outrageous surprise it was locked. He couldn't remember the last time he even locked it. He heard it again, the deep hissing and his heart raced even faster. He ran back to the front door and looked out the window. He figured if he could shout Loud enough someone would hear him.
He screamed as loud as he could and immediately he saw Jane standing right beside his car looking at him.
"Jane! Jane! Help me I'm stock inside, there's something here with me!" he shouted but Jane just stared at him.
He looked closer and found out she was wearing a dark hooded robe, Just like the thing that attacked him. He became confused, was it her, he knew witches were real but he had never met one before, was it her? Was she the one who attacked me? He thought to himself. Nothing could answer what was going on. She walked closer to the window and looked straight into Charles eyes with death and fire in her eyes.
"Are you afraid of the dark Mr Charles?" she asked as she stepped back and stood erect right in front of his house.
He stepped back from the window, fear wouldn't let him speak, not even answer the question. He turned back and looked into the endless darkness before him and fell to his knees. He realised he could die here, in his own house and there was nothing he could do about it.
The sound came again, this time the hiss was closer, it was in the living room with him. He tried to look around but he couldn't see anything. He began to scream again, hoping that someone would save him, anyone.
Then it grabbed him again and held him against the wall, it squeezed against his neck so he couldn't scream. It's green eyes starring right into his soul. He struggled but it was futile, he was passing out already but with one last push in him he managed to break free or did it let him go and why? Was it just playing with him. He crawled to the door, then he heard the deep hiss again like an animal on the haunt and immediately the sharp pain pushed him into a deep groan. He was bitten, whatever that was, it bit him on his right shoulder and he could feel the long claws pull out of the deep bite to his shoulder. He sat with his back against the door and saw the creatures green eyes move around the living room. It hissed again but this time it was deeper,darker and louder and as it walked towards him it's steps sounded like heavy metals hitting the floor. Charles closed his eyes and waited for the worse when the door opened behind him. He feel to the ground and quickly crawled away from the door. It was Mr Ade and his wife.
"we heard you shouting and we got scared, we called the police already, they should be here soon. "
The sun was already rising as bits of light rays peered into the living room.
"There was something, someone inside my house! " Charles said shaking.
"it even bit me!" he continued.
"Don't worry the police are here already, you're safe now" Mr Ade said.
18th, November, 7:00am
Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria.
Charles sat at the back of an ambulance parked right outside his house. He was being treated, there were to large holes in his shoulder and a swollen head. He had a concussion and had claw marks around his neck. A police officer walked to him
"sir my team searched the house, there's no one there, no sign of breaking and entering and the neighbors claim they didn't see anything. Have you been taking any kind of new medications lately? "
"No, look I'm not crazy, I know what I saw, there was something in there, it had green eyes and long teeth."
"sir, but theres no evidence of attack or any foreign material on the scene"
"so you're saying I did this myself? "
The officer looked at him, then looked at the woman treating him,
"sir it's possible, you'll have to come with us to the hospital so we can run some tests. " he said as he walked away.
Charles looked at Janes apartment and saw her at the front of her house starring at him. He looked at the window of her house and saw the creature standing there also it's green eyes starring into his soul. He was about to shout again but he was injected and slowly the lights faded and soon he laid there unconscious as he was drove out of the compound.
